The first drug to win FDA approval for the painkiller Celebrex, themaker has announced that it will begin selling the drug on the black market in the U. S. This is the first generic competitor to treat chronic pain. As with the popular over-the-counter medications, Celebrex has been available for sale on the black market for years. The company hopes to have the drug approved by the FDA in August.
As for whether Celebrex will be able to compete with the branded products for which it is most often prescribed, Pfizer has said it expects to market the drug in the U. for as little as $1 per pill. The company’s other drug, Pfizer’s COX-2 inhibitor Zocor, will be available as a generic in the U. and in a pack of 28 in the U. last year.
With generic competition expected to be strong, Pfizer will likely try to find a way to fill a void left by the loss of sales of the blockbuster drug, which was approved in August. Pfizer has said it expects to launch its own generic Zocor in the U. in the first quarter of 2009. The drug, known as Vioxx, is also a painkiller used to treat arthritis, but it has yet to be approved for use in the U. The company has said that it plans to market the drug in the U. for the first time, instead of its current overseas facility, which it has been in. Although the FDA has approved Vioxx for use in the U. S., the drug’s maker is likely to be asked to follow up with a decision on another drug.
Pfizer CEO Ian Read said: “I would not be surprised if Celebrex came out in the U. this year, but that’s our focus.”
The company’s other arthritis product, Lupin, will be available in the U. in the second half of 2009 and in the U. in the fourth half of 2009. Lupin is a type of medication called a Cox-2 inhibitor that helps reduce pain and inflammation by blocking the production of a substance called prostaglandins. In the U. S., Lupin is in use for most adults and is available in pharmacies for $13.99 per pill.
In May, the company will launch its new anti-inflammatory drug, ibuprofen, which is a painkiller that is also used to treat arthritis.
Photo: Pfizer/AP PhotoAs part of its efforts to get FDA approval for Celebrex and other arthritis drugs, Pfizer has received tentative approval from the U. Food and Drug Administration for the painkiller to be marketed under generic names. The drug has been available for sale for many years, but the company has seen a decline in sales. Pfizer will begin selling the drug in the U. in the second half of 2009, and it hopes to start selling it in the U.
Celebrex has been available for sale on the black market for decades. It was first approved by the FDA in 1982 as a treatment for arthritis. The drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, had a marketing partnership with Bayer in which Bayer was involved, and the company had to stop marketing the drug to the company in 1998.
Photo: Pfizer/APAs for whether Celebrex will compete with Pfizer’s Zocor, the company is unsure. Pfizer is trying to convince the FDA to approve the drug first, but the agency hasn’t given it a satisfactory answer, and it is uncertain whether it will be able to compete with the brand-name drug, or the generic version, Zocor.
In the meantime, Pfizer has said it will continue selling Celebrex in the U. until 2009. It is also unclear how much the drug will cost. Pfizer is also considering selling the drug in other countries.
In December, Pfizer will launch a new anti-inflammatory drug, ibuprofen, which is also a painkiller. As of December, the drug has been available for sale in the U. for about $14.99 per pill. It is expected to be available in the U. for about $3.99 per pill in the second half of 2009, the drug’s maker said.
The company is still trying to figure out how to make the drug more profitable.
